Lianghui Cheng, defended her thesis June 23rd, 2020 in Groningen. Lianghui focused on the structure-function relationships of human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are non-digestible carbohydrates in human milk with highly diverse structures.
We are now one step closer to understanding the structure-specific effects on intestinal barrier function (link to paper: 10.1002/mnfr.201900976) as well as their anti-inflammatory properties (link to paper: 10.1002/mnfr.202000425). The thesis present new insight in structure-function relationships of HMOs on gastrointestinal immunity and present novel possible mechanisms of action.
