The Chinese Scholarship Council provides scholarships for Chinese PhD’s who want to do their degree studies abroad. In recent years, the CCC has arranged with the CSC to award 30 scholarships to students interested in dairy research.
CCC scientists can submit research plans to the CSC, and they get access to a large database of Chinese students. When the proposal is accepted, a match can be made with a student. The CSC scholarships covers the grant for the student, but not the bench fee. Some 10 PhD students are already working in the labs of different CCC partners, two of them at the University of Groningen lab of professor of products and processes for biotechnology Gert Jan Euverink.
The CSC scholarship program is very attractive: the University of Groningen pays a small housing allowance and the usual overhead costs for PhD bursaries.
So far, 10 CAU MSc students already have started their PhD studies on CCC projects at the University of Groningen.
In 2017, the final 10 students will be selected for the dairy program. The arrangement between CCC and CSC includes the possibility for companies associated with CCC to submit proposals. As only the bench fee and a small CCC fee have to be provided, this is a very attractive way especially for small companies. A typical experimental PhD project would cost some 10,000 to 20,000 per year for a four year period.
